Highlights of the Scottsdale Arabian and Half-Arabian Futurity Reining Classic

“It’s a TR kind of night,” repeated the ring announcer as she read the results of the Half-Arabian Reining Futurity Classic at the 55th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show, held February 15-20 at WestWorld, Scottsdale, Arizona. Horses bred by Tom Redmond took no prisoners, capturing both champion and reserve champions titles of both the open and non pro divisions.

TR Skid Mark, with Tyson Randle in the saddle, won the Half-Arabian Futurity Reining Classic. Tom and Carmen Redmond, of Wolf Springs Ranch, hold the $36,000 check. To the horse’s right is Eleanor Hamilton, president of the Arabian Reining Horse Association. The bay gelding is by Zee Mega Bucks out of Chics Flip.

The horse was ridden by Crystal McNutt-Brock and is owned by Thomas Lents, San Francisco, California. Redmond, of Medina, Minnesota, owns Wolf Springs Ranch, with breeding and training operations in Westcliffe, Colorado; Santa Ynez, California; and Scottsdale.

The father/son team of David and Nathan Kent paired up to win the Purebred Arabian Reining Futurity Classic. Nathan, a 26-year-old trainer from Boise, Idaho, piloted their homebred Noble Fantasy, a five-year-old chestnut mare, to a $20,000  paycheck and a boatload of prizes. David, a breeder of Arabian and Half-Arabian horses in Malad, Idaho, owns the daughter of Vaguely Noble out of SH Shartoni.

Brian Wellman, an NRHA Professional from Hastings, Minnesota, came in second and third on a pair of five-year-old geldings owned by Richard Ames, Jordan, Minnesota. His reserve champion was Slide N Style (Black N Style x Marliera) who earned $10,250, and right behind him was TR Reindance (Jaborrs Impack x Zee Honey) for another $5,000.

Cotton McNutt, sister of trainer Crystal McNutt, was named the non pro champion on No Dough for $2,700 in prize money. She’s an American currently living in London, England, so her journey to the show was probably the longest of any competitor.
