A new magnetic IUD gives mare owners an alternative option for estrus suppression with safety and effectiveness in mind.

Undesirable estrus-related behaviors are the bane of many mare owners’ lives. The frustration often leads them to look for ways to suppress that behavior, in turn leaving them with a more willing horse, a safer ride, and hopefully more successful show pen results.
Historically, a synthetic hormone is the most popular treatment for edgier mares, but owners now have another option. A drug-free, magnetic intrauterine device (IUD) called iUPOD® is a new approach to mare management.
Thanks to the research conducted by Carlos Gardil, DVM, Ph.D., Dipl. ACT, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the simple implant that is barely larger than a quarter can change the game for mare owners worldwide.
