For Katherine Lafortune and Jag Gunnador (Conquistador Whiz x Gucci Gunner), the key to claiming the 2019 NRHA Novice Horse Non Pro L1/L2 Reserve World titles was not knowing how well she did.

“Years ago, when I ran for a title, [our ranking] got in my head,” Lafortune admitted. “This time, I asked my husband [NRHA Professional Wayne Lafortune] not to tell me where I was, and I’d just do my best.”

Her best proved to be enough, combined with the effort of her 2013 mare. Lafortune purchased “Jag” as a 4-year-old, after she’d been shown only once.

“She had a lot of talent and try, but you could tell she wasn’t finished,” Lafortune recalled. “I took a chance, and I got lucky!”

In 2019, Jag and Lafortune’s teamwork truly shined.

“I knew she was going to be with me every step of the way, and she never let me down,” Lafortune revealed. She’s very laid back, but she has that spark. She tries her heart out every single time.

“This was a big milestone,” Lafortune continued. “I’ve been showing since I was 13, and I’ve never made it this far. I have to thank my husband for all his help, and my mom, Karen Symonds, for always cheering me on.”
