Sale: 2016 Futurity Prospect
Consigner: Nowells Hickory Creek Ranch, Ardmore, Oklahoma
Purchaser: Garry Ray Smith, Springfield, Ohio
One attraction to the NRHA/Markel Futurity Sales is the confidence buyers feel in the quality of horse they expect to see consigned. That led Garry Ray Smith to peruse the sale catalog when he returned to reining after taking a few years off.
“I was looking for horses, specifically mares, that I could show and then breed,” Smith said. “The prospects that come to the sale are always good, so I try to look there.” When he spotted a mare out of Dont Miss This, a broodmare he’d admired, Smith jumped at the chance to purchase Missin My Tinsel. “I’ve always been a fan of Tim McQuay’s breeding program,” Smith explained, referencing the dam’s owner. “I took Missin My Tinsel to Shawn Flarida, and he liked her, too.”
After successful stint with Flarida in the saddle, Missin My Tinsel transitioned to the next phase of her career as a broodmare. Now, the future looks bright for the mare and her new owner, Lisa Gatt. “The main plan for her future is to raise babies,” Smith shares. “There’s a possibility they might show her, too.”
