From Ramona Billing – The 2012 NRHA European Affiliate Championship (EAC) is approaching fast. The high-class event is scheduled for July 4 – 7, 2012 at the beautiful facility of H & D Schulz in Wiener Neustadt (Austria). Deadline for entries is June 15.
The first NRHA European Affiliate Championship took place in Egna / Bolzano (Italy) in 2002. Back then, NRHA Executive Director Dan Wall commented on the goal of the event, “It (creating the EAC) is an important step towards a worldwide reining community. Also, the European Affiliate Championship should lead to more awareness of Reining and more NRHA-approved shows in Europe.” There were 62 entries in the first show with the Open Champion being Stefano Massignan aboard Mega Powered and the Non Pro Champion being Claudio Risso aboard RS Jac Flash Leo. Entry numbers increased over the years with an all-time high of 231 entries in 2009.
The NRHA European Affiliate Championship has become one of Europe’s most prestigious reining events. In 2006 and 2007, Austria hosted this show. Last year, the EAC took place in Givrins, Switzerland with 135 entries. The Open and Non Pro Champion title were claimed by two horse-rider-combinations who also claimed the NRHA World Champion title in Open Non Pro: Bernard Fonck aboard Great Sun Burst (Open) and Claudio Risso aboard Spat A Blue (Non Pro), respectively.
The 2012 NRHA European Affiliate Championship promises top-notch reining again. Only the top ten reiners of each country can enter in the various classes. The European Champions will be awarded fine trophy saddles and the renowned championship buckles – both sponsored by Western Star and H&D Schulz Quarter Horses. Besides the European Championship classes, there are plenty of other NRHA classes including four Lawson Trophies. The show will be judged by five international judges: Eugenio Latorre/ITA, Maik Bartmann/GER, Filippo Masi/ITA, Edwin Cridge/USA and Hilde Jarc/AUT. The show includes the 6th NRHA approved Austrian Western Star Circuit. There is a total purse of more than $30,700.
“The NRHA European Affiliate Championship is a great example of the expansion of Reining worldwide,” says Dan Wall. “Since the first EAC in 2002, this event has flourished and has heightened awareness of the sport. It also has helped strengthen the market for reining horses in Europe by creating a top-notch competition venue and giving riders of all abilities the opportunity to win NRHA championship titles and awards.“
