By Christina Brezack – The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) has announced that the 2013 NRHA Derby will be held June 23 – 29 (tentative) at the Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. This event showcases the world’s best 4-, 5- and 6-year-old reining horses. Thousands of spectators, exhibitors and horses attend the event each year with their eye on the nearly $900,000 purse and the $60,000 guaranteed award for the Level 4 Open Champion. The entry deadline is March 1.
New for the Derby – Non Pro Enter Up 1 Level System: This system only requires the reining rider to enter up one level above their eligibility with the option to enter more if desired. Entry fees will be adjusted accordingly and can be found in the 2013 NRHA Derby Conditions at nrhaderby.com. In previous years, non pro entry fees were automatically allocated to all four levels of the purse.
Reminder: All 4- and 5-year old horses must be nominated to compete. Owners still have a chance to do so; see the Nomination Conditions for complete details. 6-year-old Derby horses are not required to be nominated and are not eligible for the nominator incentive.
