NRHA Open Derby Champ Commanders Nic Dies from Colic Complications
From Ginger Schmersal – (580) 222-9561 – Overbrook, Okla. – The Schmersal Ranch, Dorminy Plantation and Driscoll Ranches have announced the death of the reining stallion Commanders Nic (Boomernic x Miss Bam Bam Command). Having earned over $258,000 in his lifetime and becoming the 8th highest earning horse in the NRHA, Commanders Nic will be missed by the industry. Considered by many the “big horse with the little stature,” Commander had a huge heart, enormous talent and considerable presence both in and out of the arena.
“He was part of our family,” according to Ginger Schmersal who stood him on the East Coast along with her partners Dorminy Plantation and Driscoll Ranches this last breeding season to facilitate requests from breeders in that area. “We are very lucky to have had him in our lives and our breeding program. We will miss him, but thankfully have his offspring in the barn to remember him by.”
According to Craig Schmersal, “Commander was honest and gave 100% every time I showed him. I see the same thing in his offspring. Those kind of horses don’t come along many times in a lifetime. I was lucky to have the opportunity to be partners on him and show him to a very successful career. He was the 2003 NRHA Reserve Open Derby champion, then came back in 2004 to win it. He was always there for me. I will really miss him.”
Commanders Nic, will be put to rest in Florida at the Dorminy Plantation.
